Walking through these city streets you will find yourself surrounded by stories. King John's Castle, Limerick's big attraction, holds quite a few stories. The castle has been perched on King's Island, along the raging Shannon, for over 1,000 years and is said to have been built on an ancient Viking encampment. Inside, multimedia exhibits tell the stories of castle life. Limerick, small and quiet, is at its best when explored on foot. Follow the riverside path that takes you through the old potato market to St Mary's Cathedral. The beautiful village of Adare, with its rows of thatched cottages, is a fantastic day trip around Limerick, but the region surrounding the city is rich in castles, so don't miss Blarney Castle, Desmond Castle and Glin Castle. How about some water sports? Head up the River Shannon to Lough Derg, where you can kayak, paddleboard and more.
